Segares Reserva 2012 is our winery's flagship wine, a wine for ageing, made with care and patience, designed to convey the character of the vineyard, the delicacy of the grape and the elegance of time. After years in the barrel and bottle, this wine reveals a profound complexity, roundness and a personality that makes it timeless.

Technical information

  • Grape variety: 100% Tempranillo (own vineyards in Galilea, La Rioja)
  • Vineyard: Own estate in Galilea (La Rioja)
  • Altitude: 540–560 metres
  • Soil: Chalky-clayey with gravel, ideal for slow and balanced ripening.
  • Production: Very limited production — special edition with dust jacket

Wine-making

  • Hand-picked harvest with manual selection of bunches
  • Partial destemming, controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
  • Natural malolactic fermentation in oak vats
  • Minimal intervention, no aggressive clarifications, respecting the integrity of the fruit.

Upbringing

  • Barrel: 24–30 months in medium-grain French oak (2nd and 3rd use), with gentle bâtonnage to gain volume and roundness.
  • Bottle: Prolonged resting period before being put on sale, ensuring harmony and stability.

Tasting notes

Deep garnet colour with dark brick-red highlights. On the nose: ripe black fruit (plums, blackberries), notes of tobacco, leather, vanilla and cocoa, against a complex mineral background. Slight hints of sweet spices, cloves and graphite.

Palate: powerful and structured, full-bodied, with ripe, silky tannins, balanced acidity and an elegant, smooth mid-palate. Long, persistent finish with hints of ripe fruit, damp earth and spices. Its aftertaste is enveloping, deep and persistent.

Food pairing

Perfect for roasted or stewed red meats, lamb, game stews, strong mature cheeses, wild mushrooms, hearty autumn-winter dishes and robust rice dishes.
Serving temperature: 17º–18ºC. Recommended decanting time of 30–45 minutes before serving to appreciate its full complexity.
